Land of sweets

Twirling candy canes and strings of candy flowers will adorn Mother Ginger and her children in this year’s 70th annual Nutcracker performed by the Toledo Ballet. The Nutcracker is a Toledo holiday tradition and this year’s anniversary celebration is no exception. The performance has invited two local celebrities, Rick Woodell, 101.5 The River DJ, and Richard P. Anderson,  Andersons’ Chairman Emeritus, to the role of Mother Ginger. This year will mark Woodell’s third performance as Mother Ginger and Andersons’ first. “I am delighted to do Mother Ginger. I love The Toledo Ballet and The Nutcracker, and now I’ll be able to see it up close and personal,” said Anderson.  Enjoy Woodell’s enthusiastic rendition of the role on Saturday, December  11, at 2pm and on Sunday, December 12, at 2pm. Anderson will perform on Saturday, December 12, at 2pm. www.toledoballet.net.https://www.toledoballet.net.

Shop until you drop

Get ready to shop! On Saturday, December 11, from 9am to 5 pm, all seven Toddler School locations will offer a day of free childcare for parents to pursue  their  holiday shopping lists. In exchange for the childcare, the Toddler Schools ask for a canned food item for the Northwest Ohio Food Bank. Understanding the expense and difficulty of procuring childcare for a day of holiday shopping inspired the idea for the second annual event. Hoping to relieve a bit of stress for parents, they will offer children engaging educational entertainment and arts and crafts, along with both breakfast and lunch. Visit www.toddlersschools.com for locations. Call Valerie at 419-693-7550 X211 to register.

Swimming toward success

Nine people drown every day in the United States. The Josh Project is committed to changing that dismal statistic. The Project founded in memory of John-Joshua Butts (Josh) who drowned at the age of 16, offers low cost swimming lessons to at-risk youth. On Sunday,
December 12, from 1:30 to 4:30pm, the organization will hold its annual Soul Food Extravaganza. The dinner menu includes fried chicken, turkey and cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, candied sweet potatoes, and more. The Extravaganza features live entertainment and a silent auction with paintings and handmade crafts from Ghana, glass artworks, as well as an autographed picture of Olympian Michael Phelps. “This is just one of our yearly fundraisers, and we operate solely on donations,” said Wanda Butts, founder. In conjunction with the meal, there will be a special recognition of the students who have all had the courage to learn to swim. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and children 12 and up. 419-973-1383. www.joshproject.com
