The Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West offers free parent training

Dyslexia might seem like a devastating diagnosis but it doesn’t have to be. The Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West is hosting a free parent training on dyslexia, offering tips and strategies to help parents support their child’s learning. Presenter Pam Croson, Director of the Dyslexia Education Training Center, will cover topics such as the signs and prevalence of dyslexia, tips and strategies to use at home and in the classroom, interventions, accommodations and types of assessments and understanding the results. The training is at the Maumee Public Library on Tuesday, December 12 6:30-8:30 pm.

The event is free, but registration is encouraged.

Gathering Volumes Bookstore offers book clubs for kids

Adults aren’t the only ones who get to enjoy the fun of a book club. Thanks to Gathering Volumes bookstore in Perrysburg, children ages 6-12 can be a part of one, too. If you’ve got an avid reader, consider signing them up for Book Warriors, a monthly group that reads books for 8-12 year olds. For younger readers, Mischief Makers might be a good fit. This group is geared toward 6 to 8 year olds. Both groups meet monthly and read a chosen book.

New Bedford Academy celebrates 20th anniversary

Toledo Area Parent congratulates New Bedford Academy on it’s 20th anniversary! They K-8 Michigan Public School Academy based in Lambertville focuses on ability-based instruction. “Ability-based instruction is truly what sets our school apart from other public schools,” said Principal Greg Sauter. “Our approach permits all students to be challenged and successful. Students achieving above grade level are offered advanced instruction.” The Academy uses multi-age classrooms where students of varying ages can collaborate. Heartbeat of Toledo helps new parents

Are you a new or expectant parent who could use some help with needed baby items? Heartbeat of Toledo has you covered. Pat Todak, executive director of the pregnancy help center, explains, “For parents with an immediate need, we offer emergency diapers and formula.”

A newborn baby basket full of sleepers, onesies, outfits, blankets, diapers, a handmade quilt and more is provided along with classes about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. Parents earn points each class they complete, to be used at the center’s baby boutique which stocks everything from diapers, formula and baby food to strollers, high chairs, car seats, toys and more.
