Money talk for tweens

It’s all about the future generation. They will run this country and, hopefully, if we teach them right, they will run it well. Fifth Third Bank is trying to make a difference through their L.I.F.E. (Lives Improved through Financial Empowerment®) programs— available for all ages at no cost in the hopes of inspiring people to take on financial responsibility ideologies.

One of their programs, the Young Bankers Club, teaches 5th grade students about different financial concepts and how money is earned and preserved.

“We’ve been doing these programs for several years. Young bankers began in the last 10 years,” said program organizer, Carla Nowak. “They’re focussed on financial empowerment. We want the community to be financially literate. The Young Bankers Club is teaching 5th graders an intro to finances.”

As Fifth Third is the premier sponsor of leading financial expert, Dave Ramsey, the bank will host a course for high school students to take part in learning the ins and outs of saving, planning, insurance, credit/debt, and taxes.

“The Dave Ramsey program goes more in depth and is really teaching high schoolers about obtaining student loans and credit accounts and what it all means. What’s really great about the Dave Ramsey Program is a lot of the students tell us that they take their workbooks home and teach their parents about financial responsibility. So that’s really awesome. We’ve had great results," says Nowak.

Young Bankers will be held every Thursday from April 7 to May 5. They will be taught at the following locations and times:
Chase STEM Academy (2-3pm)
Ella P. Stewart Academy (10-11am)
Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo at Sherman Academy (4:30-5:30pm)
Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo at Marshall Academy (4:30-5:30pm)
Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo at East Broadway Elementary (4:30-5:30pm)

Dave Ramsey’s Foundations in Personal Finance will take place on March 15, April 5, and April 12 for grades 7-8 at Woodward High School.
