Wicked at the Stranahan

Billing itself as “the untold story of the witches of Oz,” “Wicked” has been thrilling audiences since it opened on Broadway in 2003. The touring company will be visiting the Stranahan Theater for a two-week run, to spellbind audiences with  the origins of Glinda the Good, eventually the Witch of the North—you know, the one in the big white dress who comes down in a bubble—and Elphaba, the green-faced misunderstood girl who will grow up to be the Wicked Witch of the West. The show is recommended for children 8 and older; children under four will not be admitted. Parents who have seen the show recommend familiarizing children in advance with the story and soundtrack, which includes songs like “Defying Gravity” and “For Good,” for the best experience.

Local charter school chosen as candidate for IB program

When a kindergartner comes home with a working knowledge of photosynthesis, parents and teachers notice. “That was the clincher,” says Tiffany Adamski, Interim Principal at Central Academy of Ohio. The photosynthesis unit had been part of the pilot program for the International Baccalaureate (IB), a comprehensive, collaborative, whole-child approach to teaching and learning. When the 5 year old kindergartner’s mom reported her astonishment at her child’s understanding of such a complex process, teachers started to feel confident that the IB was right for Central.

Getting the IB program designation is hard work. “There’s a rigorous application process, and then you spend about a year as a school of interest,” says Adamski. “In that time, school personnel really dive into the inner workings of the current programming in order to decide whether there’s a good fit with the IB.” Central now enters the 1-2 year candidacy stage, when a consultant from the IB will help develop and fully implement the program school wide. “There are only nine IB Primary Year Programs in the state, and we are on our way to being number ten,” says Adamski. So far, there’s a lot of excitement. “After the first level of IB training, our teachers came back with amazing ideas and put together some spectacular lessons that had parents calling the school to talk about the differences.”

Leo Kids

At birth they quickly get into position to look into the delivery room mirror making sure they are handsome or pretty.  After all, they are the kings and queens of the zodiac.  They are very much aware of their appearance and even as toddlers they want to pick out their own clothes.  Often they want to wear hats (or crowns) to accent their royal appearances.  They are dramatic and enjoy singing and dancing – both the boys AND the girls!

They like entertainment – often participating in musicals and plays in the neighborhood, nursery school, and Sunday School.  They enjoy being teacher’s pet and follow orders cheerfully.  They are FUN!

Overwhelmed with baby products?

Walking into Lullaby Lane makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. The store, the staff and the products are my jam.  I have an almost 3-year-old daughter and I spent countless hours pouring over product reviews, blog posts, and phoning friends to find the best products for my little one. Had Lullaby Lane been in existence at that time, I would have saved so much time, effort, and money!

My number one tip for new parents is to try to not get caught up and buy everything on the market.  Generally speaking, less is more.  By buying quality baby products, you’ll get a versatile product that will last for an extended period of time.

Lullaby Lane takes the guesswork out of finding reliable, affordable and stylish baby products for your growing family. Lullaby Lane Baby Boutique is located in The Shops at Fallen Timbers (Suite 735) and we’re now offering an educational component to the store called LullabyU! Preparing your home and life for a new baby can be overwhelming. Let LullabyU help ease this transition.  Our classes offer tried and true methods for educating parents by getting back to the basics.   Let us take some of the pressure off by teaching you some things about life with baby BEFORE baby’s arrival!  We’ll host a variety of classes on a regular basis including Cloth Diapering, Baby Food Making, Registry Info Night and more! Speaking of registering, here are my top 5 product picks for new/expecting parents:

Uppa Baby Mesa ($279.99) – Protect your baby with the latest technology in Side Impact Protection and harness systems.  Use for infants from 4-35lbs and up to 32”.  This car seat just feels nice – from the weight to the sun canopy to the removable and washable cloth lining. You’re going to want to check this out!

Beaba Baby Cook ($119.99-$200.00) – Provide a healthy start to baby’s first foods!  Steams and puree in one container with a flip of a switch, making meal times a snap! Bonus: You can also use as a food processor for your everyday cooking!

GroVia Hybrid Cloth Diaper ($16.95 – $17.95) – Why not protect your baby’s bottom and your wallet by considering cloth diapers? This system is easy to use and well worth your efforts!

Baby Jogger City Select Stroller ($499.99) – Our best-selling stroller features an easy fold mechanism, large storage, telescoping handle, and endless seating configurations. Why we love it: Add another seat to turn this into a double stroller with stadium seating!

Nuna Leaf ($219.00):  This swing has a smooth ride, is easy on the eyes, uses organic textiles and has a weight capacity of 130 lbs! Perfect for newborns or when Big Sister decides she needs a ride, too!

Baby Snug Review

The Mamas & Papas Baby Snug gives busy parents a safe and comfortable place for baby to sit throughout the day. Available in five different colors—red, plum, teal, raspberry, and apple— the seat has a simple, modern design that makes it as fashionable as it is functional. The included attachable tray offers a space for baby to play and eat, and the soft seat insert is removable so the seat can grow with your baby. The ergonomic design of the Baby Snug makes it ideal for babies who can independently support their heads but are not yet able to sit up, but it can be used well beyond the first year.

As the mother of an active ten-month-old boy, my baby’s safety and comfort are top priorities, and the design of the Baby Snug provides a superior level of both. The wide, round base offers extra stability and support, making it difficult to topple over even when my baby forcefully pushes himself back and forth with his feet. Wide leg spaces accommodate his chunkier legs and allows me to easily pluck him out of the seat without getting stuck.

Because the Baby Snug is lightweight and portable it works well as a high chair on-the-go for picnics in the park or road trips to the in-laws. On a recent trip to the park, my little one happily ate his lunch off the tray without me having to hand him one bite at a time or spread his food all over the blanket. It also comes in handy when I need a nearby spot to set him when moving about the house tackling dishes and laundry. Just make sure to have a sturdy spot on the ground to place it as it is not recommended for chair or table top positioning.

When it comes time to clean up, it wipes clean with soapy water and minimal scrubbing. And because it doesn’t have all the nooks and crannies and straps that are typical of a high chair I don’t waste time trying to pick dried carrots or peas out of crevices.

While the Baby Snug has many competitive features when compared to other baby positioners, there are a couple items that could be improved upon. Most notably, while it is hard to tip over, older, more mobile babies are able to push themselves out of the seat and with some practice can learn to pop off the attachable tray. Because my baby is enjoying the freedom mobility has granted him, he has very little patience for just sitting. As soon as he becomes bored he can push off the tray with enough shaking and then roll himself out of the seat. If you are hoping to keep your mobile baby stationary the Baby Snug will not do that.

Additionally, for as great of an on-the-go seat as it is, the Baby Snug is bulky and awkward to carry, especially when trying to wrangle a baby in your other hand. Transporting the seat and baby becomes either a two-person or two-trip undertaking. And since it functions so well as a portable high chair, including a buckle system that attaches the seat to a chair would make it even more useful.

There are a few options out there for baby positioners, but when it comes to choosing the safest one with the greatest longevity the Baby Snug is your best option. At $59.99, it is priced competitively, especially when you consider the attachable tray and removable soft seat insert are included in the purchase. If you have a baby that is just learning to sit with assistance you are at the optimal time to begin using the Baby Snug. Buy it early on to maximize usage because in my experience, the older and more active your baby becomes the less she will be content to just sit.
