Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo’s Organizational Youth of the Year

Ashley Cutcher on school, life, and advocacy

Ashley Cutcher, a Central Catholic High School senior, has been named the 2023 Youth of the Year for Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo. The Youth Award is prestigious, recognized by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America that began in 1947, based on competitions at the regional, state, and national levels. Ashley, involved with Boys and Girls Club of Toledo (BGC) for many years, first attended as a child at the East Club in East Broadway Elementary before later being hired as a junior staff member when she was a high schooler at the David Werhmeister Club at Sherman Elementary.

A day in the life

Ashley is interested in science, specifically “anatomy and the biomechanics of body movement.” A dedicated student, she carries a 4.1 GPA at Central Catholic High School, while also being a member of the school orchestra. She looks forward to attending the University of Toledo to study physical therapy and is especially excited to “go on a cruise during my college spring break.”

Her role at the Club

Ashley’s role at the Club is to assist adult staff members with implementing programs while serving as a mentor to young members. Gerri Peters, director of programming for Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, spoke of Cutcher’s character and how it is an example of the organization’s principle pillars: academic success, leadership and good citizenship. “Ashley is an example of making positive life choices,” Peters explains.

When asked about advice that she would give others who want to make a difference but aren’t sure where to start, Ashley quipped, “Just go with the flow of life and don’t be afraid to speak up for yourself. You are your only advocate, and you could be one for others.”

In her role as a mentor, Ashley, who often works with those who are struggling, offers these words of wisdom: “Just because you go through a tough time or are in a rough situation, it does not mean it will  last forever. It is a temporary part of life that you can overcome, especially if you want better for yourself in the future. Don’t give up.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo was founded in 1892 and provides program opportunities for thousands of children each year at seven locations across Toledo. The Clubs are open to boys and girls ages 7-18.
