Adventures in Michigan

We’re all trying to save money but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on fun this summer. This spring I’m highlighting great ideas for Backyard Getaways on 13 Action News. You’ll enjoy a fun vacation and you won’t break the bank.
Stay at the Monroe KOA
Our first Backyard Getaway is the Monroe KOA. The campground is under new management and they’ve introduced fresh new features for your entire family. The new manager  says the staff is working to create an entire family camp experience. There’s the swimming lake, fishing lake, paddle boats, and bikes, but new this year is an inflatable obstacle course and outdoor movie theater. KOA has hired five recreation counselors who lead family camping activities seven days a week! In addition they have every level of accommodation. If your idea of camping is a tent and a fire pit they’ve got you covered. Perhaps you’d like to plug in your RV? Go for it. If your idea of vacation is a lovely suite of rooms with a kitchen, they’ve got newly renovate suites that allow mom to put her feet up while the kids play mini-golf.  A day visit is only $6 for adults and $4 for kids. KOA is off of Exit 9 on US 23 in Petersburg, Michigan.
Head up to downtown Ann Arbor
Our second Backyard Getaway is to downtown Ann Arbor. If you’ve got little ones who love Harry Potter or Percy Jackson this is the day trip for you. Tiny and mysterious doors have been appearing at businesses all over town. Turns out these doors are for fairies! That’s right, going on a Fairy Door Hunt is the perfect enchanted afternoon for your young wizards. Start online at the Urban Fairies site, I recommend you visit the Ann Arbor Library first (where you may spy your first door) and read the book about the doors. Then head out on your adventure. The other great thing about the magical little scavenger hunt is that it’s free. Fill your tank, pack the kids a lunch, and head up to Ann Arbor.
And these two getaways are just the beginning. Join me every Friday on 13 Action News at six p.m. We’ll be going on Backyard Getaways throughout May to help you plan your summer vacation.
