Never before seen by Toledo Opera Audience, “Cinderella” is showcasing the kind-heartedness and humor within a home of hatred. When watching, you will be transported into the fairy tale full of wit, while watching Angelina (Cinderella) suffer from her evil stepfather and stepsisters. When almost all hope was lost, Angelina (Cinderella) meets Prince Ramiro where she finds true love.Â
The “Cinderella” tale, which most people are very fond of, meets the opera side in this Gioachino Rossini hit. In this version though, Rossini stripped away the magical elements to reveal the true magic within Angelina (Cinderella) – her kindness. Rossini’s take on this beloved tale will make a night of delight for everyone with this family-friendly opera.Â
First performed in 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome, Italy “Cinderella” was known for containing Rossini’s finest solo voice and ensemble pieces. After its premiere, “Cinderella’s” popularity quickly overshadowed Rossini’s previous works, and continued to become more famous throughout the nineteenth century and to this day. Â
This production of Rossini’s “Cinderella” (La Cenerentola) is presented on Friday, October 6, at 7:30 p.m, and Sunday, October 8, at 2 p.m. at the Valentine Theatre, 400 North Superior, Toledo, Ohio.
The Toledo Opera will also host a free Pre-Opera Talk one hour before each show in the Grand Lobby of the Valentine Theater, where local scholars offer historical context and insight. This production stars Sarah Coit as Angelina and David Walton as Prince Ramiro. Maestro Douglas Kinney Frost conducts Rossini’s sparkling score as director Marc Verzatt brings this enchanting story to life.Â
With show-stopping vocal pieces from start to finish, Rossini’s Cinderella combines a beloved story, amazing music, and stunning visuals for a night of liveliness and laughter.
