The Knight Academy now calls 110 Arco Dr., the former home of an area civil engineering firm, (off Hill Ave. between Westwood and Byrne) its new home. “All our classrooms are well equipped,” said Executive Director Tom Baker. Recently renovated, the public charter school now has larger classrooms, Smart boards in every room, a computer lab, music room and more up-to-date features. The school also boasts a $200,000 federal grant recently received for its achievement test scores and increased enrollment. This grant is to be used on equipment for the school. “We can enhance our learning in the classrooms,” said Baker.
Currently, the school is open to boys and girls in grades 6-8., and will be adding 5th grade next year. Though students study the core subjects, they have additional studies, such as Spanish and instrumental and vocal instruction, in the curriculum as well. According to Baker, besides emphasizing excellence in academic and physical development, there is strong emphasis on character development.
Students at the academy have both extended school days and an extended school year, and come from different areas in the region, including Wood, Lucas and Fulton counties. Baker credits the academy’s excellent student body and very committed and active parents for the school’s early success.
