For nearly forty years, Twice But Nice has been an establishment in Toledo, offering families a place to buy and sell quality children’s items. Customers can find clothing, shoes, baby equipment, toys, and more for newborns to young high school age children.
“My Mom started the business, and I was just twelve years old when I started helping her,” owner Jen Johnson said. “She’s been retired now for eight years, so I took over as sole owner from her.”
Johnson recalls the early days when her mother would bring her and her little brother to the store. Eventually, Johnson brought her own son to the store.
“We didn’t want anyone else raising them. We did it so we could bring them to work with us, and it worked out for our family,” Johnson said.
This family atmosphere is what sets the store apart from your typical retail big box chains.
“We are local resale. The sole purpose is to be there for people in the local community who can’t afford new. These days, everything is online, and so many people don’t like to shop online. Lots of people are hands on and want to see things in person.”
Something for everyone
Johnson feels that her shoppers like to find unique items that you won’t find everywhere else. While the majority of items are used, shoppers can also find new items.
“About 80 percent of my store is used, and 20 percent is new. I do buy from pallets. Some people come in and like to get something for a baby shower, and they’re able to do that as well,” she said.
“I also offer formula and diapers, which is a huge seller. I’m licensed with the health department,” she said. They are unopened and not expired.”
Johnson knows that families can make their dollars stretch by selling and purchasing at her store.
Customers who sell items to the store get paid on the spot. If they choose to use the money to shop in the store, they receive an extra 25% in store credit. The store also offers layaway all year.
“What’s different for me as opposed to other resale shops is that I take everything apart and clean it,” she said. “The clothing goes into my laundry and is completely sanitized and looks brand new and ready to use right when they purchase it.”
Committed customers span the generations
Johnson appreciates her customers, from the regulars who have patronized the store for years to the fresh faces who visit for the first time.
“I get about 15 people a day who come in for the first time, and the rate of people who return to me is huge. If they come in and give us a chance and look us over, they won’t be disappointed. I can guarantee it.”
Johnson is now a grandmother to a “two and a half year old granddaughter that is my world.” She values the community that has supported her business for so many years.
“It’s nice seeing generations of people that started coming to the store for their children, and are now coming for their grandchildren. It’s just neat,” she said. “I appreciate my customers and their loyalty so much.”
