This year marks the 10th anniversary of Find Waldo Local, a summer scavenger hunt program surrounding the iconic children’s book character dressed in stripes. Find Waldo Local is now in the Perrysburg area throughout July!
This summer program is co-sponsored by Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association. Find Waldo Local brings together a community of young book lovers with small businesses. This summer activity is a great way to show your support for local businesses in Perrysburg, including 25 locations.
“The month-long event created wonderful camaraderie among the businesses and provided positive outreach to families with young children,” one participating ABA-member bookstore noted.
The character, dressed in red and white stripes and black frame glasses, was first hidden in book pages in the 1980s by Martin Handford. The British illustrator was fond of drawing street scenes and capturing the excitement of crowds. The focal point of Waldo came about when he got the idea of a book made up of his drawings. Little did Martin Handford know that his character would become a global sensation for children spanning decades.
To participate in the scavenger hunt, just pick up a free “Find Waldo in Perrysburg!” passport, which will include a list of the local spots to find Waldo! Once you find a Waldo, the business will stamp or sign your passport. Collecting 20 or more stamps or signatures will ensure participants’ entry in the grand prize drawing, which will take place on August 1st!
The event kicked off on July 1st at Gathering Volumes with Waldo crafts to celebrate the start. You can grab your passport there and at participating stores. For more information call Gathering Volumes at 567-336-6188, or visit their Facebook page.
