Stay-at-Home Spring Break Ideas in the Toledo Area

Sometimes you want to go on a long road trip with your family for spring break, but other times you want to keep it closer to home. Below we’ve listed some of our picks for area fun that have everything you need for a rollicking good time right here in the Glass City, along with easy nearby day trips.

Salamander Saunter (Adults and 8+)

Learn about the various species of salamanders that Oak Openings supports, their life cycles, and the requirements they have for conservation. Dress for the weather. $3. Oak Openings Metropark, 4139 Girdham Rd.

Tinkering Takeover at Wayman Palmer YMCA

There is no charge to attend – all you need to bring is your creativity. Never tinkered before? That’s ok, too! Expert tinkerers will be there to help you along the way. 5:30-7:30pm. Wayman Palmer YMCA, 2053 N. 14th St.

Toledo Mud Hens Opening Weekend

A new season is here, both metaphorically and literally. Opening weekend falls in the midst of spring break season. The St. Paul Saints play the Mud Hens.  4:05pm. Also on Saturday, April 1 at 4:05pm and Sunday, April 2 at 2:05pm. Fifth Third Field, 406 Washington St. 

APRIL 3 – APRIL 7

3rd Annual Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt 

Join the Wood County Museum for the 3rd Annual Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt! Find all 10 egg signs and collect the clues to win a prize. Signs will be hidden all around the Museum grounds. Pick up your “passport” book inside the Museum during open hours, or at either of the information kiosks on the grounds (visitor parking lot or behind the building by the Herb Garden). Return your passport  to the museum during open hours (10AM-4PM) to claim your prize. Please note that while the grounds are open, the Museum is closed for tours while repairs are made following December’s storm. 10am-4pm, April 3 through April 7. Choose Your Own STEM-venture

Main Library

Kids get to pick the STEM activities they want to do. A volcano, tornado, silly putty, and moldable slime are among the experiments. Try one or all of them. 2-3pm. Main Library, 325 N. Michigan St.

MARCH 28 – APRIL 13

Kids will play entertaining activities, create a cool craft, get up close and personal with some animals, and explore Zoo exhibits. $52 members, $60 non-members. 9am-3pm. Toledo Zoo, 2 Hippo Way.

Metroparks

Spring into the new season with a day of activities based around wildflowers, weather, and all the wonderful aspects of this time of year, including games, crafts, experiments, and nature walks. Day camps will happen at various metro parks.

Jurassic Quest at Glass City Center

Kids will marvel at life-sized dinosaurs, thrill at dinosaur rides, discover fossils, and so much more. $19-$36. Noon-8pm. Also Saturday, April 1, 9am-8pm and Sunday, April 2, 9am-7pm. Huntington Center, 401 Jefferson Ave.

Maumee Bay Lodge 15% discount during spring break

Make Maumee Bay Lodge your spring break destination. Have fun strolling the boardwalk, dine with a view at Water’s Edge Restaurant, and splash around in the indoor pool. The Maumee Bay Lodge is offering a 15% discount on Best Available Rate for stays booked now through April 30. The weekends look booked, but if a weekday stay is doable this is a solid choice.

University of Michigan Museum of Natural History

The UMMNH has a full roster of planetarium shows, exhibits, and hands-on activities geared towards kids from March 27 through March 31. University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, 1105 N. University Ave., Ann Arbor.

Read and Look
Take over a corner of the museum to read a book about the ancient world together. Then find related artifacts and art on display. This story time and tour is great for younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult. 2pm. The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, 434 S. State St., Ann Arbor. Free

Hayes Easter Egg Roll
A yearly tradition, The Hayes Easter Egg Roll replicates the White House Easter Egg Roll that Rutherford B. Hayes initiated when he was president. Kids can bring three hard-boiled, colored eggs to use in the traditional egg games on the Hayes Home lawn. Kids ages 3 to 10 can bring a pre-decorated egg to enter in the decorated egg contest.
